Rotary Cancer Run: Police issues guidelines

The Uganda Police has issued guidelines ahead of the 8th Rotary Cancer Run to ensure people are peaceful with good security to achieve the intended goal.

Fred Enanga the Police Spokesperson has urged all the people who are going to participate in the cancer run at the Kololo Independence ground Kampala to follow guidelines.

Rebecca Kadaga Speaker of Parliament launched the 8th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run by breaking of the ground for the construction of bunkers needed for the installation of linear accelerators at Nsambya Hospital this year.

"All those participating in the cancer run should wear bright clothes so that they can be noticed by the motorists and cyclists," said Enanga.

Enanga said participants should carry their identification and other safety basics during the whole event. He also revealed that they will have motorised and foot patrols to monitor security, while counter-terrorism units will also remain on standby.

He urged the participants to arrive by 6:00 am in order to go through the security checks. 

Kauma Nsereko deputy Commander Traffic Kampala Metropolitan said parking space will be available at City High school, Lugogo Mall, Hotel Africana, Lugogo Forest mall but the independence ground will only be for very Important People (VIP) with stickers only.

Nsereko said participants should consider the above areas for parking for this particular function.

"We don't expect people to abandon their vehicles on the roadside. We have placed traffic officers at every important point we deem necessary for guidance. If you do not have information contact the nearest police officer" said Nsereko.

He warned that all those vehicles found abandoned will be towed to the police station at the expense of the owners.

Charles Odaga the routes manager Rotary Cancer Committee said they have 5km, 10km race, and 21 km. He said the 25k  will be flagged off at 6.50am but urged people to come in time so that they can participate in exercises before takeoff. Odaga said the 10km will be flagged off at 7.10 am and the  5km will be flagged off at 7.31 am.

Juliet Kyokunda Chairperson Rotary Cancer run 2019 said they expect to construction two cancer bunkers at Nsambya Hospital at a cost  of sh18b. Kyokunda said this year they expect to collect sh. 1.8b during the run.

She said that the cancer run will be in 40 major towns across the country. She said in the last 7 cancer runs over sh.1.9b was raised.
