Mustard Seed Schools dominate CPGA Chess Youth Championship

Jul 29, 2019

About 180 children from all regions will play in the final in the first edition of the tournament aimed at improving the quality of chess play in the country.

Mustard Seed Primary and Secondary schools proved a force to reckon with as the Chess Parents and Guardians Association made its way to the outer central region in Masaka over the weekend.

As the two-day competition ended at St.Henry's College Kitovu on Sunday, the Lukaya based school had qualified 12 players to the national finals to be played in Kampala, early December.

They dominated the under 12 and under 16 categories where their girls; Briliana Nabbanja, Fatuma Nansamba, and Meble Nannozi as well as Sumaiya Mutesi, Hindu Nakiyaga and Pauline Nantume emerged as the best players in both categories respectively.

They will, as a result, have 12 players in the final compared to hosts St. Henry's College Kitovu who qualified eighth with a commanding display in the under 16 and U-18 categories, from where Lincoln Amutuhaire and Davis Twesigye won all their games, collecting 8 points each.

"We only began practicing about four weeks ago but we have done a lot of things to come this far. I was personally determined and put in a lot of work and I look forward to more wins after my senior four," Twesigye said.

Other outstanding players for St. Henry included William Ssetuba, Calton Lwanga, Charity Raphael Kabuye (St. Henry's Kitovu) and Samuel Kintu who all scored over six points each. St. Theresa Girls Bwanda and Good Samaritan will also have two and four players respectively in the finals.
