It was a back to school sort of scenario on Saturday afternoon when parent's educators from Nwoya district were trained on how to translate English into a local language.

Parent educators are parents selected from the community to help in training the children who have no access to formal schools. They are also selected depending on their good reputation in the community.

A number of communities in Acholi region lack primary and nursery schools hence pupils have to endure travelling long distances to the available schools.

It is against this background that the communities with support from Literacy and Adult Basic Education (LABE) decided to start their own community schools to cover this gap.

In the community, parents offer land where temporal structures are built by parents themselves from where children learn basic skills and knowledge.

Most of the trainers in the schools have no formal training hence to make them offer quality education to the pupils, the educators are training by LABE staffs on how to deliver the curriculum in the local languages.

The parent educators are trained on how to interpret English words in local languages such that it is easier for them to teach the children. They also learn how to make reading and teaching aids using locally available materials such as empty boxes, empty bottles among others.

"Parent educators play an important role in these community schools. That is why we decided to train them," Richard Opio, acting team leader LABE Northern Uganda.

He stressed that many communities in northern Uganda lack schools nearby hence fuelling the dropout rates.

Opio Patrick Bedagonya one of the parent educators said that the training helps them to get new skills on how to teach children.
