Police have kicked off the recruitment of 5,000 constables and Assistant Inspectors of Police (AIPs).

Suitable applicants must be Ugandan citizens of good conduct aged between 18 and 25, physically fit and ready to undertake basic training of 12 months.

Police's deputy spokesperson Polly Namaye said the exercise targets 4,500 probation constables and 500 AIPs.

While addressing journalists during the Police weekly press briefing at the Force's headquarters in Kampala yesterday, Namaye said applicants for the post of probation constables must possess a Uganda Certificate of Education (Senior Four) with at least five credits, including in English and Mathematics. While those for learners AIPs must possess diplomas in relevant fields, such as clinical medicine and community health, environmental health science, public health dentistry, orthopedic clinical medicine, mechanical engineering and automotive engineering among others.

"Those interested must submit clear handwritten application letters, passport size photos and photocopies of other relevant documents. All these requirements must be delivered by individual applicants to the recruiting team at the respective recruitment as per schedule," she noted.

Namaye warned against impersonation and forgery of academic certificates, saying those caught will face the full wrath of the law.

Validation of police pensioners

Namaye also noted that Police have kicked off validation of officers who missed out on previous verification exercises to enable the public service ministry to continue paying their pension.

She said they have already uploaded a list of 1,034 unvalidated Police pensioners to their website and urged the pensioners to go and crosscheck their particulars before July 14.

Namaye said those who fail to appear for the exercise risk being deleted from the pensions payroll.

The officers were also urged to show up with their national IDs and introduction letters from the Police Human Resource department.

For deceased officers, Namaye said their relatives should come with letters of administration

"For unvalidated pensioners, survivors' benefits became effective on March 24, 1994 and, therefore, any records before that date are not entitled to any monthly benefits as the law had not been effected yet," she added.
