Three arrested over stealing number plates

The arrested have been identified as two teenagers; Moses Arinaitwe 17, Emmanuel Byaruhanga, 18 and Monday Kwitonda, 20, all residents of Rugashari sub-county in Kagadi district.

The Police in Kagadi are holding three suspects, who have been terrorizing Kagadi and neighbouring districts by plucking off vehicle number plates and asking for money from owners.

The arrested have been identified as Moses Arinaitwe 17, Emmanuel Byaruhanga, 18 and Monday Kwitonda, 20, all residents of Rugashari sub-county in Kagadi district.

Romeo Ojara, the Kagadi district Police commander, said the trio was arrested after numerous complaints by vehicle owners that their number plates were being plucked off and were later being asked to pay money to get them back.

"We mounted an operation after several complaints and we arrested the trio, said Ojara.

The suspects in a statement at Police confessed to having been involved in the vice. They said they would leave behind telephone numbers for the owners to call and pay money in order to get back their number plates.

The suspects would then tell the vehicle owners where to find their number plates after making payments as instructed.

The numbers that were being used in getting money from the vehicle owners are 0773504207 registered under Jalmoro Dhelonga, 0786450895 under George Turyamureba and 0784813755 in the name of Evelina Tumuramye.

The suspects are said to have been stealing from the areas of Rugashari, Mabaale, Muhorro in Kagadi district and the neighboring districts of Kyenjojo, Kibaale and Kikuube.
