KAMPALA - Uganda's ambassador to Burundi, Maj. Gen. (rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza has been sued by a female traffic police officer he allegedly assaulted in February.

On Monday the officer, Sgt. Esther Namaganda, filed a suit with the Civil Division of the High Court demanding sh200m in damages the alleged assault, through Thomas and Michael Advocates.

Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Peter Otai who was caught up in the fracas is also suing Kyaligonza for sh400m.

Kyaligonza has also dragged Namaganda and Otai to court for defamation and general damages.

The court registrar, Sarah Langa allocated the case to Judge Andrew Bashaija.

A fortnight ago, Chief Magistrate Juliet Hantanga ordered Kyaligonza's arrest after he repeatedly declined to turn up to the court to plead to the charge of assault.

His bodyguards; Cpl Peter Bushindiki and Pte Robert Okurut, are also battling charges of assault before the Unit Disciplinary Committee of Military Police Brigade sitting in Makindye, Kampala.

Kyalingonza, Bushindiki and Okurut are alleged to have assaulted Namaganda on February 24, this year in Seeta, Mukono district.

Langa also directed Kyaligonza to file a defence in regard to the allegations within 15 days.

"You are hereby required to file a defence in the said suit within 15 days from the date of service of summons. Should you fail, Namaganda may proceed with the suit and judgement may be given in your absence," she stated.

In his statement at Police, Kyaligonza claimed he only clashed with Namaganda after he was forced to make a u-turn because of heavy traffic that was caused by an accident.

He also claimed that Namaganda tried to fight his bodyguards and disrespected his rank and that is why an altercation occurred.
