UCU Lady Cardinals dethrone Kawempe Girls

UCU Lady Cardinals interim coach Christian Magoba has praised his side for the tremendous performance they displayed as they were crowned Women Elite League champions.
 
This was the Cardinals first title which came after they defeated Lady Doves 2-0 in the final playoff at the StarTimes Stadium Lugogo on Sunday.
 
"The morale of the players was high and they did everything to ensure that we win. This was our season and we showed the potential more so the University and players
who invested a lot. It was a do-or-die game but we managed to handle it well and come out as victors," stated Magoba.
 
He revealed that the weekend victory was a tribute to their former coach late Peter Ssebulime who passed away close to two weeks ago.

Hasifah Nassuna who was the top scorer (14 goals) and MVP gave UCU the lead in the 38th minute with a well-taken free-kick that beat Lady Doves' goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro.
 
Lady Doves' striker Miriam Akwero had herself to blame after she missed two clear chances that would put her team level. But her final efforts in a one-on-one situation
ended in the safe hands of UCU goalkeeper Ruth Aturo.
 
Striker Maureen Kinavudori doubled UCU's lead seven minutes to the end when she picked up a well-placed ball by Jacqueline Nakasi from the left side. The skipper
made no mistake to have her effort into the back of the net.
 
The victory saw UCU walk away with sh12m as cash prize while Lady Doves went home with sh7m and their Daisy Nakaziro was the best goalkeeper. She received an
accolade plus a cash prize of sh1m.
 
The third and fourth-placed teams will also take home sh5m and sh2m respectively Kawempe Muslim, who were supposed to play Kampala Queens in the third-place match won the fair play award which came with a prize of sh1m. They received only four yellow cards in the entire league. 
 
The Kawempe versus Kampala Queens fixture was postponed after the passing of Kawempe player Adubango who was laid to rest on Sunday in Zombo district.
 
Lady Doves will now shift their focus to the FUFA Women Cup final where they face Makerere University this Saturday.
