Laker's Poetry reigns at Evoke Night

May 30, 2019

Laker, who insists on being known by just her stage name (Laker) doesn’t mince words.

There is something magical about words if strung together so beautifully and spoken in a rhythm. Before you attend a poetry session, this notion is hard to fathom. Let alone, appreciate.

But the people that attended the most recent of Evoke Night editions at Lugogo Forest Mall Parking will tell you about Laker. And how her performance stood out like the proverbial sore thumb.

Laker, who insists on being known by just her stage name (Laker) doesn't mince words. She is an outright radical in her poetry deliveries. But you will also notice that she is a feminist who is not afraid to assert and exert her opinions on the crowd.

But the beauty that makes her stand out; the one thing that makes her performances phenomenal, is her maintained innocence while at it. How her performances are an epic sensual outpour. How her voice reeks of great emotion. How she momentarily sounds like she is harmonizing in a Whitney Houston song bridge, before gliding right back in the moment with a punch line.

The audience loved her, no doubt. They screamed their lungs out, all through a good part of her performances.

Then came the parts where she went explicit and delved into topics that the crowd-related with to the point that they couldn't help laughing and tapping each other on the shoulders.

They were astonished at her boldness and her delivery. How through the microphone, she commanded the audience.

The clincher was when she performed an enchanting piece on the new TV series, Game Of Thrones that have received quite the hoot on Social Media ever since the new season premiere.

The Evoke drummer was delivering thuds for her punches, while the guitarist just gave her a bed of melody for her to lay her rhythms. And the crowd just couldn't believe what was happening.

How creative, how bold, and how way out of the box she had thought. They bombarded her off stage and asked if she'd perform again on the 31st May edition at the MTN Warehouse.

"I can't confirm. But I have a number of platforms where you can see me perform," she'd replied to her fans.

Laker is, but a snippet of many talent discoveries that are hastily rising to fame courtesy of the Evoke Night platform. With every edition comes a new talent in different fields of arts, like dance, rap, spoken word among others.

Come Friday 31st May, the second edition at the MTN Warehouse, where contestants will battle for 1,000,000 in the spoken word, rap and beat boxing arts, we will be hoping to see the rise of yet another new talent.
