Makerere University bans naked run at night

KAMPALA - Makerere University management has issued a statement cautioning students against the habit of running naked at night during the cultural week.

In a statement released on May 5, Makerere Dean of students, C.M. Kabagambe asked the students involved in the naked run also known as "Naked Mile" to stop the habit with immediate effect.

Kabagambe revealed that failure to oblige with the directive would lead the students to prosecution.  

The statement read:  "It has been brought to our attention today that one of the activities that have been adopted during the cultural week at the University is running naked around campus during the night. We were further informed that the practice was emphasized by Lumumba and Mitchell Halls and that some other women halls of residence have also embraced it."

The New Vision has learnt that the habit starts in one hall in the wee hours of the night and ends when the participants jump into the swimming pool, sometimes in the state of drunkenness.

"This is very unfortunate and unacceptable in the premier institution like Makerere University. It's also potentially dangerous to human life," Kabagambe added.

By the issue of the statement, the dean asked the University's chief security officer and the officer in charge of Makerere University Police Station to be on the lookout for the culprits to have them prosecuted
