Solar Project lights up Communities in the Albertine Region

World Wide Fund for Nature-Uganda Country Office (WWFUCO) is implementing the Scaling-Up Rural Electrification Using Innovative Solar PV Distribution Models Project with funding from the European Union (EU).

The overall objective of the project is to improve rural livelihoods and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions through widespread access to clean and renewable sources of energy by 2025.

To achieve the above objective, WWF-UCO is working with a range of partners in the Albertine Rift region to champion the adoption of solar technology in schools, health centres and rural homesteads to improve service delivery at the institutions, reduce maternal health problems and improve community livelihoods.

The partners working to distribute solar systems to the households are the community based organizations (CBOs). The CBOs are organized in form of a network. Through this network, the project has distributed about 1,400 Solar Home Systems (SHS) to rural households in 20 districts of the Albertine Graben—a region globally known for its rich biodiversity. This has reduced on the risks associated with households' use of kerosene both health wise and economically.

In September 2018, the project completed the installation of solar PV systems for 51 institutions (20 health Centres and 31 schools) in 6 districts. These installations were commissioned by the Hon. Peter Lokeris, Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development, at Riki Health Centre III in Arua District.
