KAMPALA - The director of Sharia at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council has urged Muslims to look out for the moon on Saturday.

If sighted Saturday night, the month of Ramadhan -- a period fasting -- will begin on Sunday, said Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Kakungulu.

But if the moon is not seen Saturday, fasting will automatically start on Monday.

Muslims fast for up to 30 days.

Kakungulu warned Muslims against fasting before the moon is sighted, saying they stand to lose on rewards.

He urged the faithful to help the needy during the Holy Month of Ramadhan and also adhere to Islamic principles. He also urged women, including non-Muslims, to dress well during this period to avoid tempting Muslim men.

Kakungulu implored whoever sights the moon on Saturday to contact the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council on these mobile numbers: 0772525170, 0702525171 or 0772409504.
