New papal nuncio preaches peace, love at Easter homily

The newly appointed papal nuncio to Uganda, Luigi Bianco, has asked Christians to uphold the virtues of peace, love and charity as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

While celebrating his maiden mass at Rubaga Cathedral, Bianco also reminded Christians to avoid sinful acts even as they experience daily life struggles.

"I am happy to be celebrating mass with you all in this beautiful cathedral. A few days ago, I arrived in Uganda to start my mission. It is a pleasure and honour for me to share the word of God and transmit Pope Francis greetings to you all," Bianco said.

Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo, the state minister for higher education who represented the government during the Easter mass celebrations, welcomed Bianco and pledged the government's support in attaining his mission.

Muyingo also revealed that the government in its next financial budget allocations has focused on eradicating poverty in the country.

He, however, called upon Christians to join existing groups to ensure they benefit from these programmes.

Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, the Archbishop of Kampala diocese reminded the congregation to promote peace and reconciliation in their daily lives.  

"One of the things we should remember about the resurrection of Christ is that his message was mainly on peace, reconciliation and forgiveness," he said, adding that some of the challenges Uganda is facing, require the same virtues.

He commended the government for accepting the proposal of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda to promote the country's national dialogue.
