KAMPALA - Police in Ntinda have arrested two people suspected to be con artists who allegedly waylay Ugandans at banks and steal their money.

The suspects; David Gasumba, a resident of Makindye, and Mary Akello, a resident of Entebbe, were arrested near Diamond Trust Bank Ntinda branch.

"The duo approached a young man who had been sent by his boss to bank sh2m and they tried to deceive him that they have dollars that they wanted to exchange. They promised the young man that they would give him a good rate and he would also take some of the cash as profit," a statement from Kampala Metropolitan Police said.

The suspects then took the young man (name withheld) out of the bank to a nearby restaurant.

Fortunately, police had already been tipped and they swung into action.

"We went to the restaurant and arrested the duo. On searching them, we found the suspects with papers that were cut nicely into pieces to depict the size of a dollar. On either side of the bundle of papers, they had carefully tied one dollar bill to make it appear like a bundle of dollars," the statement said.

Police said the Gasumba and Akello are currently being detained at Ntinda Police station pending court action.  The two face fraud charges.
