Muslims mark Women's Day in Kampala

 

New Vision's Farooq Kasule:


Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG) Marian Mutonyi, has thanked Government for the affirmative action that has enabled women to take up positions in high offices. She has been speaking at the Muslim Women's Day celebrations at Old Kampala on a hot Friday.

She says women should each encourage each other in marriage, ensure girls are in school, start businesses and add value to themselves.

Women have travelled from all regions of the country to attend the annual celebrations.

The Women's Day celebrations among Muslims started in 2016 when Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) established a department of women and youth affairs.

He also paid a visit to former president Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi in hospital.

Moi, Jomo Kenyatta's successor, occupied Kenya's top office from 1978 until 2002.

Museveni checks on Kadaga as three-day Kenyan visit ends

 

President Yoweri Museveni has wrapped up his three-day state visit in neighbouring Kenya with a visit to Jomo Kenyatta's (Uhuru's father) mausoleum, where he paid his respects.

He also visited hospitalised former president Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi as well as Uganda's Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga in Nairobi.

"I wish them speedy recovery," tweeted the President.

Supplementary funding for UG planes, Namugongo shrines approved

Parliament has approved supplementary funds meant for payment to the Catholic Church for the completion of the Namugongo Martyrs Shrines and the payment for aircraft for Uganda Airlines.

The House has also adopted the report of the Budget Committee with amendments on formation of the Uganda Airlines Company Limited by an act of Parliament and the ground handling services to managed by the same company.

MPs discuss Uganda Airlines

 

New Vision's Miriam Namutebi at Parliament:


A heated debate is going on in Parliament as MPs discuss the revival of the Uganda Airlines. Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, who is chairing the session, has asked legislators to remain calm and discuss the committee's report on the revival of the airlines.

Barnabas Tinkasimire says: "Whereas I agree with the proposal that we need this airline, we cannot proceed when the processes are not clear. Who has the commitment to buy these aircrafts? Can we be sure the invoices are issued to the government of Uganda when they are laid in the House? I think before we proceed, we must understand who the invoices are issued to. If they are not issued to the government, then who is receiving them?"

Another MP, Theodore Ssekikubo raises tempers when he says that Enhas' contract expired in 2013.

Aggrey Henry Bagiire, the Minister of State for Works and Transport, retaliates and refutes allegations that Enhas runs Entebbe International Airport.

Deputy Speaker Oulanyah: "It's a fact that a deposit has been made for the aircraft. The contract states that additional payment should be made by tomorrow - the deadline is March 30. If we do not make this addition, we forego the money already paid. So we are here sitting because there is an emergency right now. There have been errors like mishandling of documents, people running around. It is so unfortunate that I am not the president, I would have sacked a few people."

Minister Kamya reveals that President Yoweri Museveni will be the guest of honour at the women celebration event at Kololo.

"This day is specifically put aside to celebrate women here in Uganda. It is to prepare women to take part in those jobs and activities done by mainly men," she is quoted as saying.

Celebrating women

Happening now at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala. Minister for Kampala Beti Kamya is addressing reporters about Kampala Capital City Authority's (KCCA) celebration of women due to be held at Kololo Independence Grounds on April 10.

We learnt that activities at the event will be vending and women who have done extraordinary work will share their testimonies.

Earlier this month - on March 8 - Uganda joined the rest of the world in marking the International Women's Day. And the upcoming Kololo event will have been seen as an extension of this celebration.

Meanwhile, Uganda's football governing body FUFA says that US-based Crested Cranes (national women football team) pair of Sandra Nabweteme and Yudaya Nakayenze have arrived in the country and joined their teammates in camp at FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

They are preparing for their double fixture against Ethiopia in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualifiers.

  'SGR key in cutting down transport costs'


 

On day two of his state visit, President Uhuru Kenyatta took his guest, President Museveni, on a tour of the Mombasa Port.

"It is a great facility that is key for our countries' trade relations. What we call for is more efficiency so that our business people do not lose time getting their goods cleared," tweeted Museveni.

Later, he would take the four-hour Madaraka Express train ride that I have just mentioned in the the entry before this one - from the busy port city to the capital Nairobi.

"The SGR is key in cutting down transport costs, reducing pilferage [theft] and ensuring goods arrive faster to the hinterland. It will greatly reduce business costs," said Museveni on Twitter.

 

On his part, President Kenyatta said his Ugandan counterpart showed the "remarkable partnership" that exists between their countries by being the first visiting head-of-tate to travel using Kenya's new modern railway line.

"Kenya has invited Uganda to join in the joint development of the SGR to ensure it continues to Kampala. The SGR runs parallel to the old metre gauge railway line where passenger trains run between the Mombasa Terminus and Nairobi Terminus at Syokimau," tweeted Kenya's State House.

  Museveni has 'comfortable' train ride from Mombasa to Nairobi



President Yoweri Museveni became the first visiting head-of-state to travel using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

On his second day of his state visit in neighbouring Kenya, the Ugandan leader took the train from Mombasa to Nairobi on Thursday, and said it was "a comfortable four-hour ride".

On his train ride, Museveni was accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Monica Juma (foreign affairs) and James Macharia (transport, infrastructure, housing and urban development).

Migrants see no end to misery as pope visits Morocco

 

Migrants at a squalid camp in the Moroccan city of Casablanca have few hopes for the future, after their dreams of a new life in Europe were squashed.

Illegal but tolerated, the Oulad Ziane camp is the last of its kind in the country following the dismantling of similar ones in southern Agadir in March as well as one in the central city of Fes.

"This is no life. All we have is God," lamented Marcelin, a Cameroonian who has been in Morocco for five years and is now stranded in the camp after several failed attempts to leave for European shores.

"We don't expect anything from anyone, but we hope at least for a little security and hygiene for children," said the man in his 30s.

He was speaking ahead of a visit to Morocco this weekend by Pope Francis who will make immigration one of the themes of his landmark trip.

In a message sent Thursday, the pope said he would meet with "migrants ... who represent an appeal to build together a more just and fraternal world".

Home to migrants from across sub-Saharan Africa, the Oulad Ziane camp is a scene of misery and despair.

Chess, the war game building bridges in South Sudan

 

It is a typical weekend at the chess club, one of several in war-torn South Sudan, where a growing enthusiasm for the game saw the nation last year secure its first ever gold medal in an international competition since gaining independence in 2011.

Legge was introduced to the club chess during his civil engineering studies in Khartoum during the south's war for independence from Sudan.

In South Sudan's first ever chess tournament in 2014, he came third.

For the young man struggling to forge a life in a country where war has left millions like him in limbo, chess is a panacea.

"When I feel traumatised about my plans as an engineer... I go to chess, I find solutions," he said.

"It's a matter of passing time but also to refresh my mind and give me the vision of what will be my next move in life."

Cholera as Mozambique prepares mass vaccinations

 

The number of confirmed cholera cases in cyclone-ravaged Mozambique climbed sharply to 139 Thursday as authorities prepared to roll out a mass vaccination campaign to stem the spread of the deadly disease.

"The total number of cholera cases is now 139," government health officer Ussein Isse told AFP.

President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday told a news conference authorities had called off rescue operations for victims of the deadly cyclone which tore through the central parts of the country on March 15.

He described it as the "worst humanitarian disaster in Mozambique".

The storm killed at least 468 people and affected 1.85 million.

He said 945 rescuers had taken part in the two-week long search and rescue operation.

"We thank all of them. They are heroes," he said.

World Health Organization official David Wightwick said mass cholera vaccinations would start next week.

The country is awaiting the delivery of 900,000 doses of vaccines expected in the country on Monday.

'Police fire tear gas at Sudan protesters defying ban'

 

Sudanese police fired tear gas at protesters defying a nationwide state of emergency on Thursday, with demonstrations in the capital Khartoum and elsewhere, witnesses said.

Protests and deadly clashes have rocked Sudan for more than three months, fuelled by accusations that the government has mismanaged the economy, causing food prices to soar and creating shortages of fuel and foreign currency.

On Thursday protesters demonstrated in Khartoum's Burri and Bahari districts as well as in Omdurman, the capital's twin city, witnesses said.

They were swiftly tear gassed by riot police.

Protesters also rallied in the town of Madani, southeast of the capital, and in a town in the state of North Kordofan, witnesses told AFP by telephone.

15 killed as Shabaab bomb busy Somali restaurant

At least 15 people died when a car bomb exploded on a busy street and ripped into a nearby restaurant in Somalia's capital on Thursday, medics said.

Security officials and witnesses reported bodies strewn on the ground as plumes of smoke rose high into the air after the  bomb detonated on Mogadishu's Maka Al-Mukarama road, one of the seaside capital's main thoroughfares, an area busy with businesses and travellers.

It struck as people were eating lunch.

The attack was claimed by Al-Qaeda's Somali affiliate Al-Shabaab, in a statement posted on a pro-Shabaab website.

Abdulkadir Abdirahman Adan, director of the Aamin Ambulance service, said that 15 people had been killed, as well as several more wounded by the ferocious blast.

Witnesses described scenes of devastation.
