Afrie shines at debut concert

The weekend was a women's affair, across the social scene. With many events themed along the International Women's Day, came a young songster, Afrie's debut concert.

She might not be popular on the mainstream entertainment scene, but Afrie, real names Anne Nassanga, has gradually accumulated fans after performances at different shows and festivals around town.

Dubbed Afriedom, the show at Design Hub in Kampala on Friday evening was a convergence of growing fan base, part of which she has grown from her online showcases titled, Afrie-bytes. 

Afrie's audience was in an enclosed venue and gave them an up-close and personal affair in a show that was engaging given the infectious jovialness she oozed on stage.

Clad in a simple shimmering body-hugging outfit, she started off with her song Yoli Yoli, to which fans sang along, and evoked a feel-good mood in the audience.

The curation of the show reeked of creativity with a dash of simplicity, with a backup band and two dancers on a simple stage. Without back-up vocalists, Afrie used her vocal prowess to entertain her fervent fans.

The jokey Afrie engaged her audience with stories behind songs she performed, including Let Her Know, Askari, and Go to School, a collabo with skilful youthful rapper, Wake.

But it was when Afrie, on her keyboard piano, performed Mulala, her most popular song among fans, that took revellers to seventh heaven, singing along to every word before she ended the show at 10:30 pm.
