Top US envoy to visit Uganda

A top US envoy for Africa will next week visit Uganda on a three-day tour that is expected to strengthen the ties between the two countries.

According to officials from the US Embassy in Kampala, during his three-day Kampala visit, Tibor Nagy, United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, will also hold bilateral talks with President Yoweri Museveni.

Nagy is expected to jet into the country on March 7.

After meeting Museveni, the visiting US diplomat will also hold a joint press conference with the US Ambassador to Uganda, Deborah Malac, on March 9 at Serena Hotel.

"Assistant Secretary Nagy will provide opening remarks discussing his visit to Uganda and his planned meeting (the day prior) with President Museveni, and will then open up the floor for questions," a statement issued by the US Embassy on Tuesday noted.

Nagy's profile

• He arrived in the United States in 1957 as a political refugee from Hungary

• Served as Vice Provost for International Affairs at Texas Tech University from 2003 - 2018.

• He served as the United States Ambassador to Ethiopia (1999-2002), United States Ambassador to Guinea (1996-1999) as well as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Nigeria (1993-1995), Cameroon (1990-1993), and Togo (1987-1990)

• He is a retired career Foreign Service Office

• Spent 32 years in government service, including over 20 years in assignments across Africa

• Previous assignments include Zambia, Seychelles, Ethiopia, and Washington, DC.

• He co-authored "Kiss Your Latte Goodbye: Managing Overseas Operations," nonfiction winner of the 2014 Paris Book Festival

• He is a graduate of B.A. from Texas Tech University and M.S.A. from George Washington University
