Police officer held over robbery

TORORO - The Police in Tororo district are holding one of their own, John Bernard Kirunda, who allegedly robbed sh1.8 million from a businessman, Alfred Obure, on gun point.

It is alleged that the accused, attached to Merikit police post raided the cattle trader's home in Merikit town, Kachinga East village, Merikit sub-county on Sunday.

The victim (Obure), who reported the case at Tororo central police station told the media that the accused and two other suspected thugs armed with AK 47 riffles broke into his house at around 4am on Sunday and put him and the wife on gun point. The accused ordered him to surrender all the money he made the previous day. He however recognized the accused but his accomplices had covered their faces with hoods.
He further revealed that after getting the money, the thugs ordered him not to make any alarm, threatening to kill him if he disobeyed their orders.

When contacted on phone, the Tororo District Police Commander, John Rutaagira, neither confirmed nor denied the incident promising to brief the media after the meeting he was attending to.

The Merikit sub-county LC3 chairperson, Joseph Obure condemned the act, requesting the police to seriously handle the matter stressing that this is not the first time the police officer is accused of similar offences.
