Ankole diocesan school heads face dismissal over exam malpractice

Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa called for a serious probe by UNEB and government in schools that are suspected to have cheated for students and concerted efforts in curbing the vice.

MBARARA - The Bishop of Ankole Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Sheldon Mwesigwa has vowed to fire all teachers involved in exam malpractice in schools under the Church of Uganda in his diocese.
"I have insisted on a zero tolerance to cheating, teachers in our schools know it very well that I have passed a warning. Anybody who is involved in cheating shall not be allowed to be in leadership of our schools. They should know that it is very easy to get to know that you are cheating, we shall work with government to ensure cheating is eliminated in our schools," Sheldon said.
Bishop Sheldon made the remarks at the thanks giving service of Mbarara Junior School which was held at St. James Cathedral-Ruharo on Saturday.

He further called for a serious probe by UNEB and government in schools that are suspected to have cheated for students and concerted efforts in curbing the vice, which he said has become a serious disease that needs immediate intervention from all players in education system.

"I'm telling you, there is high level technology of cheating; some of our children have results which are not theirs. UNEB should probe and do research on these schools. Can you imagine, if a school cheated and a Bishop was there giving thanks, how do you start giving thanks? I pity schools which are founded on religious grounds which cheat and they are there we know them." he added.
Mbarara Junior school which is among the best performing UPE schools in the country had 133 pupils pass in grade one.
Bishop Sheldon revealed that the Ankole Diocese education department has doubled efforts in the inspectorate and administering of exams and as a result the schools have improved.
The Diocesan schools registered a first grade percentage pass of 14.8% compared to 11% national in the 2018 PLE results.
The pupils were urged to work hard.
