Musclemen display power and skills at RM Beast Mode Powerlifting Championship

Musclemen displayed power and strength as the RM Beast Mode Powerlifting and cross fit championship raged on at the Satellite Gym in Kisaasi on Saturday.

The first of its kind, the one-day event attracted over 30 participants who competed in the bench press, squats and dead lifts. The event was a qualifier to the annual Arnold Classic to be held in Ohio, USA; February 28-March 3.

Their performance impressed American powerlifting Coach Terry Hoey who flew in to tip the participants.

"The guys did phenomenally very well. There was a very good turnout and the competitors would do well anywhere. It's is also a good start building a good Paralympic program and I just want to thank all those who made this happen," Terry said.

"There are some youngsters who need to improve on their technique; it requires a lot of practice. Many guys and the girls did very well and they can be competitive at the world stage," Terry noted.

Outstanding power lifters on the day included Muzamir Bukenya who topped the 60-66kgs category. Bukenya lifted a total of 480kgs, having bench pressed 95kg, squatted 180 and bench pressed 205kgs. Fahad Tamale and Edward Kabugo were second and third respectively with 430 and 480kgs.

Mike Ssebaale was the star in the 73-77kgs category after he made 250kgs in the dead lift for a total of 630kgs. He benched 140 and squatted 250.

Sam Ssengo, Deo Ssewankambo, Joel Bakanzewa and Juddy Alberto in the ladies category where the other outstanding lifters on the day with total lifts of 480, 500, 650 and 335kgs respectively in their respective categories.

In cross fit Derrick Mwanje was again the best beating Joel Kayiza and Daniel Kalungi while Mohamed Nigo was the best in the Paralympics category with a total lift of 135kgs.
