KAMPALA - The Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) results released by Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) last week did not go according to script with a number of nondescript primary schools in rural areas posting better performance than the traditional ‘heavy weights' in urban and peri-urban areas.

The result has been swirling ‘rumours' on a number of social media platforms that UNEB graded candidates on a kind of affirmative action parameter to suit those in rural areas.

Some had even intimated that the government was intentionally grading PLE candidates differently to favour those studying in Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools to create an impression that UPE was after all delivering.

It was on the aforesaid grounds that Samia Bugwe MP, Gideon Onyango yesterday made a case for Parliament to sanction a probe into the recently released results.

"The grading was not uniform and it's better to have a probe to find out what exactly happened," Onyango said.

However, Kadaga shot down out of hand Onyango's plea for a probe saying the legislator had no proof to substantiate his claims.

"Are you suggesting that pupils in rural schools should not pass with aggregate 4?" Kadaga said.

The privatisation of the education sector has spawned fierce competition among schools to have their students post good grades to attract new students.

The result has been a litany of shenanigans including examination malpractices.
