Alvin Aurugai beat the odds to score 9

Jan 20, 2019

Alvin was born in Scotland in 2004, relocated to Mozambique in 2005 to 2008, taken to South Africa in 2011, brought to Uganda in 2011 to 2013 and taken back to Mozambique in 2014.

KAMPALA - Alvin Aurugai's education was continuously interrupted by the parent's travels and settlements in different parts of the world.

Born June 28, 2004  in Edinburgh, Scotland, Alvin Aurugai,14, was taken to Mozambique in 2005, where his mother comes from. It is here that he attended Kindergarten in 2008.

In late 2008, Alvin was moved to South Africa, where he lived until 2011 before relocating to Uganda.

While in Uganda, in late 2011 - 2013, Alvin enrolled at Lohana Primary School where he attended Primary one, two and three.

During his first month in primary four in 2013, Aurugai was taken back to Mozambique and his parents got him a school in Malawi, in 2014.

"In Malawi I studied in two different schools, St. Andrews International and St. Patrick International though the education there was completely different from the one in Uganda for I was put in a class that when compared to Uganda it was two classes behind. I also struggled with languages. When I came to Uganda I only knew Portuguese and had a hard time learning English. This was my greatest challenge because in Uganda I had to use English and in Malawi I had to use Portuguese." Said Alvin Aurugai.

However, the education in Malawi, according to his parents, was not as good as that in Uganda.

They thus brought him back to Uganda in 2016, and enrolled him at Victorious Primary School (Devine campus) where he studied primary five in the last month of third term and joined primary six with a 14% in mathematics in 2017.

He gained confidence in primary six when he started improving gradually from aggregate 35 to aggregate 18.

"I faced a challenge with the new environment as the other pupils didn't like associating with me since I was not as good as they were, but after a great improvement in my performance they began to relate with me."

The young go-getter beat the odds to pass in division one with aggregate 9, in the recently released 2018 PLE results.

More about Alvin

Alvin's mother, Sarah Aurugai and father, Phillip.O.Aurugai risked their son's life in Malawi where he had to stay with strange families as the school was not entirely a boarding school, yet the parents were living in Mozambique. This was because they wanted him to study.

Alvin is grateful to his parents and teachers for not giving up on him.
