The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is to analyze samples of an energy drink that made a consumer erect for almost six hours.

Recently a consumer lodged a complaint with the National Drug Authority (NDA) that Natural Power SX energy drink, caused him an erection for nearly six hours.

The consumer also reportedly experienced an abnormal heart beat and constant sweating after taking the drink.

NDA forwarded the matter to UNBS for further investigations since it has no mandate to regulate energy drinks.

"This therefore, to share the findings of this analysis with UNBS for your further management since NDA does not regulate energy drinks," said NDA in a letter.

UNBS's Principal Public Relations Officer Godwin Bonge Muhwezi confirmed recceipt of the letter and said action will be taken after investigations.

"We received the letter and we will start investigations and do further analysis to find out the contents of the product. Action will be taken after the findings," Muhwezi said.

Natural Power SX is an imported energy drink manufactured by a Zambian company known as Revin Zambia Ltd.

UNBS is mandated with formulation and promotion of the use of standards; enforcing standards in protection of public health and safety and the environment against dangerous and sub-standard products.

Previously NDA did tests on the samples and found some adulterations on the drink.

"Following the complaint, NDA sampled the product (batch number E66C and expiring on 30th August 2019) from Mega Standard Supermarket on 30th October 2018 and subjected it to full monograph analysis using a method adopted from USP. The results obtained indicated that the product was adulterated with Sildenafil Citrate," NDA says in a December 28 letter and received on January 4,2019 by UNBS.

The drugs authority says it is their mandate to ensure availability at all times of essential, efficacious and cost effective drugs to the population.

Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It's also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), according healthline.com.
