A total of five people have perished in road accidents in Oyam district within a period of one week, and over 20 have been injured in the same accidents.

Two People died on sport while three others were rushed to Pope John Paul Hospital Aber in Oyam district after a lorry they were travelling on overturned at Karuma bridge.

The incident occurred at around 11:00am while they were traveling from Acholi sub region heading to Kampala.

Traffic police from Oyam district headed by Chamutai Basti and traffic police from Diima in Kiryandongo district rushed to the scene.

The driver Ronald Eyiru from Kamuli district and Hassan Kafero from Luwero town council died on the spot.

However, Patrick Segawa, 39, the owner of the truck and charcoal sustained minor injuries on his right leg.

Segawa said they were seven people in the vehicle and one person had not been accounted for by 3:30pm on Tuesday.

The bodies were taken to Kiryandongo Referral Hospital mortuary.

 Traffic flow affected


Oyam traffic police chief Chemutai said preliminary inquiry indicates that the cause of the accident is reckless driving and speeding. "We strongly caution all road users to abide by the traffic rules and regulations and always follow the road signs," he said.

Last Thursday, three people were killed in separate road accidents on Lira Kamdini highway while 19 others sustained injuries and were rushed for treatment Pope John Hospital Aber and St Mary's hospital Lacor in Gulu

One accident happened at Loro Odike trading center in Loro sub-county, Oyam district when white car registration number UBB 979S heading to Lira knocked Dabra Akello, a Primary Four pupil of Odike Primary School and it over turned. The girl died hours later at Pope John Hospital Aber.

Another accident happened at P.O village in Myene sub-county when Denis Alobo from Alebtong district, riding a motor bike registration UDP 362 X collided with Ambrose Okello riding motorcycle number UDU 257. Alobo died on the spot.

The Chairman LC3 of Myene sub-county Patrick Olobo, said both riders were riding without head lamps when the accident occurred at around 8:30pm

Another accident involved a tipper lorry UAM 492Q from Minakulu heading to Dicunyi village in Kamdini Sub-County that overturned and killed one person identified as Mike Ayo a former LC3 councillor of Minakulu sub-county.

The traffic Police officer Oyam district, Chemutai Basti, said the cause of accident was mechanical problem.

 Bullion van that overturned


In another incident, two vehicles overturned on Aboke Bobi road in Bobi, Omoro district after a bullion van registration number UAT 845P belonging to SGR knocked a salon car number UAG 922N and both vehicles overturned.
