Christians advised to go for big projects

The Vicar of Namirembe Cathedral, Reverend Festo Kalungi has asked Anglican Christians to invest in big projects, which will enable the Church to move forward.

He decried what he called the "culture of apathy," which he said was preventing many Anglican Christians from supporting the development work of the Church.

"We Anglican Christians have a common weakness; we want to build simple structures. We also construct our churches without thinking about the future.

This explains why most of our old churches are now being pulled down.

They were built without the expectation that the Christian population would shoot up. Today they have become too small for their congregations," said Kalungi.

He was delivering his sermon during the thanksgiving dinner for Mengo Archdeaconry, at St Luke's Church, Kibuye (Centenary Gardens) on Saturday (December 1).

Kalungi encouraged Christians to be more supportive to the development projects of the Church and also, to extend their generosity beyond their immediate churches.

He further advised Christians never to be scared of undertaking massive projects because: "God always uses ordinary people to use ordinary things to accomplish extra-ordinary projects."

The Archdeacon, Venerable John Kavuma Gitta, said that Christians of his Archdeaconry had organized the function in thanksgiving to God for the many blessings that God had lavished on them over the years.

He said that after celebrating their centenary, three years ago, the Christians started building a 2000-seater church at the headquarters of the Archdeacon.

He thanked the Christians, friends and benefactors of the Archdeaconry for supporting the project, which he said was progressing well.

The head of the laity of the Archdeaconry, Francis Nalukoola asked Christians to continue donating towards the project with even greater zeal.

He said that after constructing the chaining wall of the Church, which consumed sh1.5bn, the engineers were now going to the second phase of the project, the laying of the shrub, which needed sh340m. Nalukoola said that the Church would be constructed at a total cost of sh8bn.

The Chief Guest, Engineer James Oulanyah encouraged Christians to always donate money to the Church, so that it continues to transform the hearts of the people and enhance peace and development.

Oulanyah later donated sh10m towards the project of the new Church.

Other Christians who donated included, George Ssebina of Christ Care Schools (Sh17m), Fred Yiga (sh1m), Total Graphics (sh2m), Maggie Ddungu (sh1m), Ssalongo James Lubwama (sh2m), Engineer Godfrey Kaaya (sh1m), Francis Nalukoola (sh1m) and Muyenga parish (sh1.5m).

During the function, the Christians were entertained by children from Joy Nursery and primary School, Masajja (Kibiri B). Musical ministers like Rev Maxwell Ssebuggwawo and Isaac Mwesigwa also entertained the congregation.
