MISS WORLD 2018

Miss Uganda Quiin Abenakyo is now counting on Ugandans' support to have a shot at the Miss World crown come the grand finale on Saturday to be held at Sanya, in China.

This follows her achievement last Saturday when she won a Head to Head challenge, guaranteeing her a place in the finals.

On Saturday, Abenakyo presented her "Beauty With A Purpose" project that highlighted the plight of teenage pregnancies in Uganda, asking Miss World Organisation to join hands with her and come up with common goals and objectives to fight the challenge.

She said: "My Beauty With A Purpose project is fighting teenage pregnancies as one out of four girls aged 13 to 17 is either pregnant or a mother. This is very disheartening.

Abenakyo continued: "As I look at all the ladies here, I must say we are really blessed that we do not have to go through all that because we can't say the same for all our sisters out there."

She cited a story of a one 12-year-old Daisy who was molested by her father and grandfather in eastern Uganda, resulting in pregnancy, and after asked the judges: "Imagine giving birth to your grandfather's child.

This is happening a lot in Uganda, especially in eastern Ugandan where I come from and it has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies.

What am I doing about it? Together with the Miss Uganda Foundation, we have a Keep A Girl-Child in School programme and this is to enable and to encourage girls to go back to school, give them the necessary resources and skills that will enable them go back to school.

I believe when you educate a girl-child, you are educating the entire community. And the biggest platform one can ever have is Miss World."

The judges seemed to empathise with the aforesaid plight in eastern Uganda and related with it before awarding her the victory.

One judge, Manushi Chhillar (Miss World 2017), was impressed with the way the 22-year-old Ugandan beauty queen has dealt with the situation in Uganda: "It's the toughest to help a community when you have to go against a few people of the community. Well done Uganda," she said.

The Head to Head Challenge was introduced in 2017 and has continued to attract a huge audience online.

Abenakyo is now counting on Ugandans to vote for her online.
