WORLD - A court in Linz will pass a verdict within two weeks in the case of a retired Austrian officer suspected of spying for Russia, a spokesperson for the court told Sputnik on Wednesday.

The regional court of appeal will hear a challenge by public prosecutors against the decision of a lower court in Salzburg to release the suspect accused of leaking military secrets to Russia for 26 years, pending his trial.

The spokesperson said the lawsuit would go before the Linz court later this week and would take between 10 and 14 days to rule on.

The prosecutor's office said it lodged the appeal on Tuesday, arguing there were good reasons to keep him in custody.

The retired army colonel from Salzburg is believed to have worked for Russia between 1992 and 2018.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the claim was unfounded and only served to complicate ties between the two countries.
