Bazeyo, Kakumba endorsed for top Makerere jobs

Prof. William Bazeyo, the acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (VC) in charge of Finance and Administration at Makerere University (MAK) could be the institution's substantial DVC after scores by the search committee put him in the lead.

The Makerere University Senate, which is the chief academic organ of the University, also recommended Dr. Umar Kakumba as the best candidate for the position of the DVC in charge of Academic Affairs.

The Senate Search Committee chaired by Prof. Joseph Y.T. Mugisha recommended both candidates who attained high scores of 86.4% (Bazeyo) and 80.76% (Kakumba).

According to a press release by Rita Namisango, the university's spokesperson, Prof. Anthony Mugisha who was competing against Bazeyo scored 58.16%.

"The search committee also recommended Dr. Betty Akullu Ezati and Dr. Gorettie Nsubuga Nabanoga who were competing against Kakumba, but met the minimum requirements and scored 60%, to Makerere University Senate," she said.

Ezati scored 71.18% whereas Nsubuga got 66.72%

According to the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act, the role of a DVC includes; assisting the VC in the performance of his/her functions, ensuring quality assurance, perform the functions of VC (in his absence) and perform any other duties as delegated to him by the VC.

Other roles include coordinating curriculum review and development, oversee programmes, monitor colleges, institutes, gender mainstream and to advocate for policies that promote academic excellence.

Kakumba is the current Dean of School of Business and has been a Senate member for eight years, whereas Bazeyo is the acting DVC finance and administration
