Thousands of alumni, students, staff and friends of Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi, (fondly referred to as UMU) on November 9 gathered at the University’s main campus in Mpigi district to celebrate the university’s 25th anniversary. The celebrations started with a thanksgiving mass, which was presided over by the Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, the Most Rev. Arch. John Baptist Odama. The mass was also concelebrated by Arch. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga (the university’s patron), Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok (the chairman of the university’s governing council), and several other Prelates of the Uganda Episcopal Conference. The function was also graced by the President Yoweri Museveni, who inaugurated the university in 1994. Museveni thanked the Catholic Bishops for starting Uganda Martyrs University, which he said, had prevailed over its humble beginning and become one of the best universities in the country. He donated sh400m towards the university’s sh16bn silver jubilee monumental building (which will be constructed at Rubaga). He also donated sh100m towards the development projects of the alumni, and another sh10m as a silver jubilee present.
