PRESS STATEMENT ON PROGRESS OF IMPLEMENTATION OF THE YOUTH LIVELIHOOD PROGRAMME

On Tuesday, October 24, 2018, The New Vision published a story titled Sh. 527m Youth Livelihood Funds paid to ghost groups.

The published article carried severe inaccuracies about the Youth Livelihood Programme and the Ministry would like to clarify as follows.
• To date the Ministry has fi nanced a total of 16,439 groups benefi ting 200,678 Youth, of whom 46% are female.
• Recovery rate stands at Shs. 21.898 billion (68%) of the Sh30.726 billion that is due. This percentage of repayment is no mean achievement and by all standards equals or even betters some commercial banks and micro-fi nance institutions.
• Countrywide, a total of 218 groups have made 100% recovery of the funds advanced to them and are ready to transition into Small and Medium Size Enterprises

The figures presented in the article published on 24th October 2018 are of June, 2016 which performance has since signifi cantly changed. In addition, the allegation that Shs. 527m was paid to ghost groups is not only false, misleading but also only intended to taint the image of the Programme.

The groups being referred to as ghosts are those that suffered natural calamities such as drought, disease, landslides among others. The Ministry, working with the respective Local Government have since engaged the respective groups with a view to Re-fi nance and or reschedule the repayment plans of the affected groups. CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON THIS NOTICE
