The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga has asked Ugandans to develop a culture of commemorating individuals and events.

He argued that if a leader has no sense of history, he or she will find it hard to know the problems of the people and will also not be able to find appropriate solutions to them.

Mayiga made the remarks during the 25th Archbishop Kiwanuka Memorial Lecture at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel on Thursday.

Mayiga praised Kiwanuka for being a visionary and courageous leader, who always identified people's problems and found appropriate solutions to them. He asked contemporary African leaders to emulate Kiwanuka's principles and examples.

The Archbishop of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga spoke highly of the important role that Kiwanuka played during the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs.

He said it was Kiwanuka who convinced Pope Paul VI to canonize all the Uganda Martyrs. Some people were proposing that only Charles Lwanga be canonized but Kiwanuka put up a spirited defense which convinced the Pontiff to canonize all the martyrs.
