Pepsi unveiled a sh100m sponsorship towards the annual event

As Uganda celebrates 56 years of Independence on Tuesday, over 150 golfers will be in action competing in the 8th edition of the Pepsi Independence Golf Tournament at the Palm Valley Country and Golf Club.

But, 36 professionals are the first to test the course as they fight for sh30m in a 36-hole competition that sets the event in motion on Sunday and Monday.

Those who missed the cut in the Uganda and Serena Open will even be more eager to finish ahead in the two-day competition.

Last year, Fred Wanzala edged Phillip Kasozi and Herman Mutaawe by one and three strokes to claim the biggest share of the prize money.

On Thursday Pepsi unveiled a sh100m sponsorship towards the annual event with Sheraton, Stanbic, ICEA adding sh32, 20 and sh6m respectively while long time partners Mukwano are also still in for the annual tournament.

Addressing the media at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Pepsi Brand Manager Audrey Lang promised a more exciting tournament promising to grow the tournament it into one the major golfing events in the country and also enhancing the players' growth.

"We are super booked by the amateurs and are ready for the professionals who are playing for sh30m," Lang said.

Sheraton's David Ssekitoleko said it was a great opportunity for them to partner with Pepsi as a way of promoting sports tourism.

"We shall make sure everything works out at Palm Valley and outstanding players will themselves prizes in accommodation, fitness on top of a sumptuous dinner at the ‘19th hole'.

Stanbic's Cathy Adengo, ICEA's Rehema Nakilyowa, Clarkson Insurance's Alex Makata and Mukwano's Sangam Kader all pledged their companies' commitment to the tournament.

"We gave golfers Personal Accident cover last year but we are now introducing the Gold Cash Medical Insurance this time to ensure all the golfers are covered," Nakilyowa said.

"We want to promote golf as much as we do with other sports," Adengo stated before Kader pledged more support as part of their CSR for many years to come.
