Sh774m raised in Cancer Run

A total of sh774m was collected from this year's Centenary Bank Rotary Cancer Run that was graced by the Vice-President Edward Ssekandi and the government chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa on Sunday.

This year's collections like last year, will again go towards the purchase of two Linear Accelerators (modern cancer treatment machines) and the construction of the bunker for the Linear Accelerator at the Rotary-Centenary Bank Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital.

The 2018 Cancer run was held under the theme, 'be the inspiration'  and took place at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds and in all major towns across the country with participants competing in the 5km, 10km and 21km races where the number of participants was over 3500 in Kampala only.

Chief runner, Nankabirwa vowed to keep supporting the Centenary Rotary Cancer Run and thanked the runners for their generous contribution.

Nankabirwa who was taking part in the run for her first time thanked all the participants who have been taking part for the past eight years and  vowed to always run for the cause.

"This is my first time, but I promise to always take part in this activity because it's not a one man thing, but rather all of us, I wish to thank all of you for turning up in big numbers, let's always support this cause until cancer is kicked out," said Nankabirwa.

Ssekaandi is one of the pioneer runners and also promised to support the run until cancer is completely kicked out of the country.

"Am happy that I am part of the Rotarians who are fighting for a good cause and I will always be around until we met our goal of knocking out cancer," Ssekandi vowed

Now in its eighth year, the Centenary cancer run has attracted Parliamentarians on board to also fight to cease cancer.

Every year, sh1m will be deducted from each Member of Parliament in support of the cancer run and the aim is to raise sh18b.
