Prominent City lawyer Kiryowa Kiwanuka is new Express Football Club chairman.

He takes over from Hassan Bulwadda who assumed the chairmanship last season from Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, who is also Youth and Children Affairs State Minister.

"The company appoints/nominates Kiryowa Kiwanuka as club and board chairman for a period of three years," reads an August 14 club resolution.

Kiwanuka or KK as he is popularly known, is a grandson of the club's founder member Jolly Joe Kiwanuka and a son of former chairman Jimmy Mugambe Kiwanuka.

"I am coming home. I was born in Express. I have always known Express as a family. I intend build this bond again."

In sports circles he is best remembered for his 2014-15 stellar show as Uganda Golf Union president.

He won virtually all competitions Uganda entered. Amongst these was Uganda's first ever Africa Zone six victory.

He was also President Yoweri Museveni's lawyer in a 2016 case where the head of state's re-election was challenged. Kiryowa again triumphed when the Supreme Court ruled in Museveni's favour.

"Kiwanuka, 45, is tasked to appoint a full board, the management, and technical committees of the sports club and, all other club officials shall report to him," reads the resolution in part.

This shall all be in preparation on the new season that kicks-off next month.

Kiwanuka replaces Bulwadda whose assignment last season was to save Express from relegation.

Bulwadda took charge after a tumultuous term of Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi where players went for months unpaid.

Before Nakiwala another lawyer Kavuma Kabenge had also struggled to keep the club afloat.

Well aware of what he is getting into, Kiwanuka is nevertheless optimistic.

"I am hoping I can make a difference. My first task is to get people I can work with. I have met a number of people. I hope it will work," stated an optimistic Kiwanuka yesterday.

He believes lifting the club to its past glory is a possibility. "The club's problem has always been organisation. I believe this is something that can be sorted out."
