Team Uganda started the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSSA) games Athletics championships on a high note, baging seven gold medals on day one of the event at Umbworoherane Stadium in the heart of the hosting Rwanda district of Musanze.

Onduma won gold in the boys 10,000m

 As expected, Africa Javelin bronze medallist, Josephine Lalam led Uganda's quest for their first overall title in five years, after regaining her prowess in the Javelin throw with a 53.52m, which not only gave her and Uganda a gold, but also became her personal best throw from the 51.57m past record.

Victoria Awidi, who beat Lalam by just 27cm to win her first Javelin Gold in the last year's games in Gulu, settled for silver after throwing 47.88m.

However, Awidi won Gold in Long Jump after making a 5.49m jump, beating her compatriot Scovia Lakot who won silver after jumping 5.45m.

Uganda's other Golds came in the boy's 10000m where Lamek Onduma raced away from two Kenyan contenders in the second last lap, to win his first Gold at 30:07:7 minutes while Godfrey  Chanwengo also beat the Kenyan opposition to win the 400m boy's Gold with a 47.6 minutes finish.

Angella Nakayima also emulated Chanwengo by winning Gold in the girls 400m after crossing the tape on 55.4 minutes, beating her fellow Ugandan Scovia Akol, who came second at 56.9, while twin Sister Agnes Apio also won Gold in the 100m girls with a 12.1 minutes finish.

Anthony Tukamuheebwa won Uganda's seventh Gold of the day, when he threw 42.90m in the discus competition he was taking part in for the first time.

Other golds for Uganda came from 1500m girls and Short Put girls, as Uganda races to clinch the overall title for the first time since winning it in 2014 in Burundi and rivals Kenya settled for three Golds with hosts Rwanda having yet to win any.

Meanwhile, it turned out to an all Uganda affair in the Netball quarter finals, when all Uganda side St Mary's Kitende, St Noa, Luyanzi and Buddo made it to the semis set for Friday.
