Opposition activist released

An opposition activist has alleged harassment by security operatives for reportedly opposing the amendment of the constitution to remove the presidential term limits.

Immaculate Taaka, 30, said she was arrested by plain clothed officers as she left her home in Kampala and detained in undisclosed location.

Parliament recently voted to remove the term limits, a move analysts say will allow President Yoweri Museveni to run for office for as many times as he wishes.

"I have been followed by security guys several times and sometimes I would not sleep home for fear of being arrested," Taaka said.

"We were some of the youths who opposed the amendment of the third term for the president and opening of presidential term limits."

She said that they worked together with her party colleagues to mobilise youths countrywide to ensure that the youth oppose what they called bad governance.

However, the Police denied arresting those opposing the move to lift the presidential term limits and instead said they were arresting those disrupting the peace.

Human rights bodies have also accused the Police of arresting and jailing opposition members on tramped up charges.

Recently, opposition leader Dr. Besigye was arrested for allegedly organizing an illegal assembly.
