The association of the Friends of Mother Kevin (and the Little Sisters of St Francis) has inducted fifteen new members.

Rev Mother Mary Kevin (1875-1957) was an Irish missionary nun, who founded the Catholic religious institute of the Little Sisters of St Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa. She also founded institutions like Mount St Mary's College, Namagunga, St Francis Hospital Nsambya and Naggalama Hospital.

The association of the friends of Mother Kevin was formed by her Ugandan admirers, to help the Little Sisters of St Francis to further her mission of holistic evangelism.

The new members, who included Dr Andrew Ssekitooleko (the Executive Director of Rubaga Hospital), were inaugurated by Fr Emmanuel Mukasa, the Vice Rector of Nyenga Minor Seminary, during the ninth annual meeting of the association, which convened at Mother Kevin Post Graduate Medical School, Nsambya on Sunday.

Delivering his homily during the thanksgiving mass that preceded the meeting, Fr Mukasa spoke highly of Mother Kevin, describing her missionary activity in Uganda as "highly inspiring."

"Mother Kevin was an exemplary missionary sister. She exhibited extra-ordinary love and commitment to the people of Uganda and Africa. Her desire to change the conditions of the poor and disadvantaged people was immense. This is what drove her to build several educational and medical institutions, which continue to benefit us even after decades since her demise."

Mukasa later asked members of the association of Mother Kevin to be more committed to their objective, which include among others: extending assistance to the Little Sisters of St Francis, promoting their works and also, encouraging them to manage their own projects and also, encouraging young girls to join the congregation.

The chairperson of the association, Mary Josephine Nabuyungo, asked members of the association to do more to attract new Christians into the association. She said the association would sustain its mission only if it recruited and also retained a big number of devoted Christians country-wide.

Rev Sr Antonia Namuli, the head of promotion and publicity for the cause of the beatification and canonisation of Mother Kevin, said the diocesan phase of the process was progressing well.

She said they had managed to collect the required primary sources, which included her letters, reports, registers and pictures. She said they were now going to gather the secondary sources, for example the stories that people said about her. When everything is done, they will hand over their findings to Bishop Christopher Kakooza, the Ordinary of Lugazi, who will forward them to the Vatican.

Namuli asked ChristianS to support the fundraising initiatives that the Sisters have put in place to raise funds for facilitating the project. She said that atleast sh600m was required to facilitate the entire process.

The treasurer of the association, Sr Mary Gorette Nassuuna also encouraged members of the association and all Ugandans of good will to give financial support to the association.
