How Gen. Kayihura was arrested

According to reliable sources, Kayihura's arrest followed a meeting on Tuesday, between the heads of security agencies and the Commander-in-Chief, President Yoweri Museveni.

Kayihura was subsequently summoned to report at the army headquarters in Mbuya and was informed a military helicopter was being dispatched to pick him from his home in Kashagama, Lyantonde district. Kayihura has been staying at Kashagama in Lyantonde since he was replaced on March 15.

According to a statement released yesterday by the army spokesperson, Brig. Richard Karemire, Kayihura was required to report to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. David Muhoozi, at the army headquarters in Mbuya on June 12, as a serving officer.

"A helicopter was subsequently dispatched on Tuesday to transport him from Kashagama, but on arrival, Gen. Kale had travelled to Mbarara and so it had to return to Entebbe Air Force Base. The helicopter was again yesterday sent back and it has returned safely to Kampala

with him on board," Karemire said. Sources revealed that there had been heavy deployment at Kashagama since Tuesday when the helicopter first travelled to pick up the general. On the other hand, Muhangi and Ndabwoine were arrested from Police headquarters in Naguru and detained at the counter-terrorism offices in Naguru, while Ndahura was picked up from Masindi.

Hotels, homes searched

Military officers from several security agencies, together with a handful of senior Police detectives had sealed off, and were searching homes of the suspects, which is standard

procedure after any arrest. Lyantonde town was tense on Tuesday evening after a combined force of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Internal Security Organisation (ISO) and Special Forces Command (SFC) searched Court Yard and Sky Blue Hotels, where Kayihura was said to be a regular guest. The security operatives cordoned off the two hotels and nobody was allowed in or out as the search went on.

According to workers at the two hotels, the soldiers asked them when Kayihura last visited the place. They (hotel staff) told the officers that they had not seen him for about a month. After a search, without Kayihura in sight, the army vehicles left for Ssembabule Road, which leads to Kayihura's Kyakatebe village in Kashagama sub-county, where the former Police chief's county home is located.

Security was tightened in Lyantonde and Police vehicles were seen patrolling the town. "The role of the police officers was to help in conducting the search at the different suspects' homes," the source revealed.
