1.0 BACKGROUND

Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB) is a National umbrella organization, playing a significant role in the health sector of Uganda. As a National umbrella organization, UPMB supports the activities of 291 health units affiliated to the Protestant churches of Uganda. These 291 Health facilities include 18 hospitals, 10HC IV's, 79 HCIII's, 184 HCII's, and 15 Health Training institutions. The health facilities are all faith based and private not for profit with a common goal of providing affordable, good quality health care to Ugandans regardless of ethnicity and religious creed. Their presence is strong in rural areas reaching the most marginalized and vulnerable groups of society.

Accessibility to drugs and medical supplies for member units is ensured through JMS, founded and owned jointly by UPMB and Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau.

UPMB core functions include:
• Facilitation of member health facilities through capacity building and support supervision,
• Participation in policy formulation
• Advocacy and networking on behalf of member health facilities
• Resource mobilization on behalf of member health facilities
• Grants Management and Research The mission of UPMB is "Supporting Members to Witness for Christ through the Provision of Quality Health Care for the Glory of God"
