KAMPALA - Dramatic scenes played out at International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala on Tuesday when a senior Muslim cleric got re-arrested by plain clothes operatives in the presence of uniformed security officers.

Dr Ismail Kalule, who has been on remand over purported terrorism, had been granted bail by Justice Moses Mukiibi, but his freedom was short-lived.

He had been freed on a sh20m noncash bail.

On May 26, 2016, Kalule was acquitted of terror charges over the July 11, 2010 Kampala double bombings.

But immediately after court's verdict, plain clothes security personnel arrested him outside the Kampala High Court premises and whisked away.

He was later charged with terrorism at Jinja Chief Magistrate's Court and sent to the High Court to stand trial on December 19, 2016.

Following Kalule's re-arrest, his family members and friends including her old aged mother were left crying as he was being whisked away.

Mukiibi said he was inclined to grant bail to Kalule because the state failed to adduce evidence showing that he may cause lawlessness to society, abscond court, interfere with court justice and commit other offences while on bail.
