Ministry of Water and Environment has directed water and sanitation development facility - North to make new design of water and sanitation facility at Lagoro Rural Growth Centre in Lagoro sub county in addition to the existing one.

The current Lagoro water and sanitation facility is one of the three projects constructed by the ministry at cost of sh2.3bn expected to serve a population of approximately 10, 000 people. Others are at Mucwini and Namokora.

Principal Engineer, Joshua Ssenengo's directive follows site visit of the projects to technically commission it last week.

Ssenengo explained that the design was an incremental on the existing system due to lack of resources.

He said a new design should be made in addition to the one in place so that those in the upper part of the area can also access clean safe water.

The district chairperson, Jackson Omona also echoed the same sentiment saying that the scheme has fallen short of meeting the demand of the people for safe clean water. "The Ministry should consider re-planning and upgrading this it," he said.

The Resident District Commissioner William  Komakech also said that the design of government projects should be done to stand the test of time. He said the water problem in Lagoro shall not be properly addressed with the defect discovered.

He called on the communities to take care of the facilities. He emphasized that the people must own the project to avoid going back to the time of scarcity.

The system is constructed by Awico Engineering Company Limited whose scope of work was to construct pumping stations, storage tanks, transmission lines, distribution systems, disinfection facilities, water office blocks, institutional and household sanitation facilities, and pumping systems using solar power from production borehole water sources. They also procured tools and equipment for maintenance.

Procedure of connecting customers

People who want to be connected to the water system first apply and their homes are inspected to ensure that they have proper sanitation facilities in their homes before they are eligible.
