ENTEBBE - President Yoweri Museveni has held a private meeting with the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

The two leaders met Sunday evening at Nakasero State Lodge in Kampala.

The meeting comes on the heels of claims by the Archbishop on Easter Sunday that government has planted priests to spy on him.

On Easter Monday, President Museveni spoke with Lwanga over the phone and they later agreed to meet on a way forward on ironing out the standing matters.

Investigations are underway by the relevant authorities.

On Good Friday, Lwanga said an anonymous caller had told him that the government had recruited priests, nuns and other clergy as undercover agents.

Two days later, while leading Easter prayers at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala, the Archbishop reiteracted his stance on spies.

Security minister Gen. Elly Tumwiine told New Vision that the state spies on anyone that does wrong things and that the Archbishop needn't worry if he not doing anything that warrants spying on him.

Some MPs have called for a probe into the claims of spies in the church.

In his recent comments, which significantly thrust him in local headlines, Lwanga appealed to President Museveni to be wary of false information supplied to him by some security agents.

"I was told that the spies have reported that I want to overthrow Government. (...) You people in ISO, CMI, Police, stop telling the president lies. Mr president your mind is being poisoned and you are acting on that," Lwanga said.

However, in his response later, Brig. Richard Karemire, the army spokesperson, said no-one is spying on the church and that Lwanga's allegations are baseless.
