KAMPALA - The anticipated judgment in the Police Tribunal trial of former Buyende district Police Commander Muhammad Kirumira is expected today.

Senior Commissioner of Police Dennis Odwong Odongpiny, the court chairperson, is expected to deliver the verdict.

He adjourned court last week to allow both the defaulter (Kirumira) and prosecutor Katherine Kusemereirwa to prepare their final submissions before judgment is passed.

Kirumira, also an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), is battling two charges: of unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority and one on corrupt practice.

Last week on Tuesday, he refused to attend court proceedings without journalists.

Kirumira argued that the guidelines that had been given in earlier trials, to keep journalists, were intended to protect witnesses. However, he said, the case in question was dropped and, therefore, there is no threat.

He argued that he would not be tried in darkness unless he understood the constitutional interpretation of the move.

Kirumira was arrested early February following utterances of his resignation from the Police job without following the procedure and was remanded to Police cells.

A number of charges were then brought against him, some of which he is still battling.
