PROTEST

MITYANA - Transport has been paralysed on the Kampala-Mubende highway as people were rioting over the lack of electricity in Bamunanika village.

The road was closed for over an hour as the rioters blocked it with stones and tree branches in Mityana district.

Residents said have not had power for over two weeks and that their efforts to contact Umeme had been fruitless.

"We have been forced to do this so that they (Umeme) can know how affected we are," Joseph Musisi, one of the residents said.

As residents continued to block the road, the Police arrived and tried to re-open it by force, but they (residents) resisted. The Mityana resident district commissioner, Yahaya Kakooza, later arrived and intervened.

Kakooza called for calm and promised that the problem would be solved soon. Together with two village leaders, the RDC went to Umeme offices in Mityana town to address the issue. The leaders agreed with Umeme officials in Mityana that power would be reconnected by Wednesday afternoon.
