Uganda's two representatives at the women's Africa Club Volleyball Championship in Cairo, Egypt VVC and Nkumba blew hot and cold at the end of day one.

VVC beat DGSP from Congo Brazzaville 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 to claim a much needed win as they opened their account in style.

Nkumba had a more difficult day at the office because they were up against the continental power house Al Ahly. They went down in three tough sets with a score of 7-25, 12-25, 16-25.

Leading the scoring for the Egyptian giants was Ukrainian Katenya Silchnkova with 12 points, while Habiba Nawala led the scoring for the Ugandans with her 8 points.

Lively atmosphere

Coming up against the host nation is always hard, but it is even more difficult facing them as hosts in a noisy arena unlike the one in Uganda.

The Egyptian team was too hot to handle for the largely inexperienced side even when they tried to resist it, the atmosphere was too intimidating.

"The performance was good. Nkumba lost to Al Ahly the defending champions and hosts of the championships but the points got better successively. A win for VVC against Congo is also a great start for that pool," Uganda Volleyball Federation president Hadijja Namanda said.

Action continues today at 7 pm with VVC facing the other Egyptian team El Shaams as Nkumba take a day off, but will play Cameroon on Thursday and Nyong on Friday.
