Widow charged over a pig accident

AMURIA - A widow has been charged over failure to restrain her pig, leading to a deadly accident that killed a 50-year-old motorist, James Iyebet last week.

Grace Alungat from Ocal village in Abarilela sub-county, Amuria district was fined six cows and over sh600,000 to compensate the family of Iyebet.

Ben Okello, a resident, noted that Iyebet died at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital three days after the accident. He (Iyebet) had sustained severe head injuries after he knocked a pig that was trying to cross the road while he was riding a motorcycle.

He urged both families touched affected by the matter to remain peaceful and avoid playing the blame game as it might result in worse incidents.

Alungat acknowledged having left her pig to loiter in search of food, which against the sub-county by-laws.

She asked for forgiveness, noting that her acceptance to compensate the family for Iyebet was to create peace.

Michael Eluluma, the area LC3 chairperson applauded the two parties for accepting to settle the matter amicably, appealing to the community to emulate the same spirit.

He cautioned residents against allowing their animals to stray to avoid getting into such problems.
