Prostitution among adolescents worries Soroti leaders

A religious leader in Soroti district has raised concern on the rise of prostitution among the under-age folk in the district.

Rev. Charles Opio of PAG Soroti main church says that the soaring numbers of young girls who hit the streets of Soroti town every night to peddle prostitution has reached disheartening levels.

He observes that dozens of both school-going girls and drop-outs have joined the trade to make money.

"Prostitution is something that is going to ruin the future generation, because it is robbing us of people who would provide labour, and take on responsibility from the old people and I pray that God intervenes," Rev. Opio said.

Opio observes that the irony of this is that a third of them are young women barely into their adolescence.

He calls upon the district leaders to foster synergy with religious leaders to come up with strategies aimed at ending the trade.

According to Rev. Opio, prostitution hinders the fight against HIV in the district and Uganda at large.
