Mpigi farmers tipped on up scaling technology

Farmers in Mpigi district have been trained in using advanced technology in order to increase their farm outputs and profits.

The one-day field study which took place in Muduuma Sub County on the farm of Robert Mugerwa, a dairy farmer attracted hundreds of farmers from seven sub-counties of Mpigi district. They include Muduuma, Kituntu, Mpigi town council, Kiringente, Nkozi, Buwama and Kamengo.

According to Joseph Sserwada, the Mpigi district production officer, the study aimed at sensitising farmers in dairy production and creating closer relationship between National Agricultural Research Organization, Ministry of Agriculture and the farming community of Mpigi district.

"We also intended to facilitate better research extension farmer linkage and collaboration with the farming community to achieve technology up scaling," Sserwada said.

Farmers also trained in caring for crops like beans and maize where demonstration to show them how the maize shriller is operated was carried out

Experts from Mukono Agricultural Research and Development Institute taught farmers how to prepare and keep foliage for a long time during dry seasons.

Varieties of beans were exhibited for farmers to choose the best type.

 
Several Mpigi district leaders including the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Swaib Lubega Waggwa, LC5 Chairman Clever Peter Mutuluuza, sub county chairpersons and councillors at different levels attended the study.

Speaking during the closing ceremony of the field study, Haji Swaib Waggwa Lubega urged farmers to put into practice the knowledge they have acquired if they want to increase profits.
