National team golfers told to maintain fitness

Feb 01, 2018

Team coach Amos Kamya advised the golfers to be self-driven.

Golfers who made it to the national team are expected to maintain their form and discipline on and off the court ahead of several international engagements this year.

After making it among the top twenty, coach Amos Kamya is going to give each one of them a training routine that they have to follow to the dot under the supervision of their respective club captains.

The drills will also involve physical fitness ones that the coach will monitor through video evidence to ensure they adhered to the training.

Incoming Uganda Golf Union president, Innocent Kihiika said there will be a minimum number of games each of the players will have to play per month with results posted to the coach and the national team committee for monitoring. He said the training regime is compulsory for the top twenty golfers, but also optional for the top forty golfers who made the cut during the two-day qualifiers.

"We are starting with the All Africa Junior Championships, March 4-10 in Morocco, followed by the Zone V Championship in Zimbabwe in April, a Juniors Open in St. Andrews, Scotland in July, Victoria Cup in Nairobi, the East African Challenge (Zone IV) IN August and the Uganda Open," Kihika said.

"The first camp will be for the All Africa Juniors, two weeks before the tournament, but this time we are focusing much on fitness because it is one of the reasons we have not been doing well in some of these international tournaments," team manager Oscar Semawere noted.

Team coach Amos Kamya advised them to be self-driven in doing the training routines, work on their fitness and maintain their discipline.
