Jinja Police arrest four over stolen truck

Police in Jinja are holding four men accused of stealing a truck and selling its spare parts as scrap.

Jinja DPC Martin Mbabazi Barahukwa identified the suspects as Ali Kisambira, who was arrested in Kakamega (Kenya) with the help of Interpol; Yahaya Isabirye, Hamisi Kisambira both scrap dealers and Mohammed Kisakye.

Barahukwa said the vehicle, registration number UBB 331N, belonged to Margaret Bogere of Njeru town council.

"We managed to arrest three of them from Katwe, where they were selling spare parts of the truck, while Kisambira was arrested by Interpol from Kakamega in Kenya," he said.

Bogere said she hired Kisambira three months ago to drive the truck. She explained that on the December 8, Kisambira disappeared with the vehicle and when she tried to call his mobile phone, it was switched off.

She said on Friday last week, she again called Kisambira, but his friend picked up and informed her that the vehicle was sold at sh17m by the accused and that he (Kisambira) was waiting receive a balance of sh3m.

She said some parts were recovered yesterday from Katwe and Kawempe in Kampala.

The DPC said the suspects will be charged with theft. Barahukwa also announced that they are going to start night patrols to arrest idle and disorderly people.
