Dec 20, 2017

MPs Wilfred Niwagaba and Medard Ssegona were blocked from serving Kadaga with the court summons and were whisked away by the Police.

The parliament is expected to take a vote in the controversial bill regarding the lifting of the constitutional provision that caps the age at which someone is legible to contest for president to 75.

The bill, which has created a lot of anxiety and has seen the most stormy debates in the history of Uganda's parliament is sponsored by Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi.

On Monday, speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga suspended six MPs over indiscipline during debate. However, the MPs have gone to court to challenge the suspension, saying the speaker acted in error because she had already adjourned the House.

They went to court and court is expected to pronounce itself this afternoon.

MPs Wilfred Niwagaba and Medard Ssegona were blocked from serving Kadaga with the court summons and were whisked away by the Police.

Deputy Attoney General Mwesigwa Rukutana says according to the rules of procedure, a speaker cannot be served with court summons within the precincts of Parliament.

Meanwhile, Parliament has been adjourned and will resume after 30 minutes to resume a process that is likely to conclude the bill.
